Puerto Vallarta
This vacation mecca offers a combination of attractions for clients of all ages and interests, including wonderful beaches and ecological marvels

One of Mexico's most popular vacation spots, Puerto Vallarta attracted 16th-century Spanish and British pirates as the perfect spot to rest between plundering communities along the continent's Pacific Coast. Its key location, on secluded Banderas Bay - the second largest bay in the world - protected the looters from surprise attacks as well as hurricanes.

Today Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's finest destinations - combining history with beautiful beaches and a large number of ecological wonders to explore. Its spectacular weather lures more than 750,000 tourists a year, primarily from the U.S. and Canada. About 20 percent of all North American travel is repeat business.

Puerto Vallarta calls itself a beach-and-more destination, combining small-town quaintness and big-city sophistication. It's a blend that appeals to a large variety of clients. Funseekers, active eco-adventurers, families, young professionals and honeymooners can easily feel at home in Puerto Vallarta. The resort targets both the budget and upscale leisure markets, offering a wide range of quality accommodations in many price categories.

Active Adventures

Among the activity choices are sports fishing, deep sea fishing, lake bass fishing, horseback riding; day tours to jungle, mountain and deserted beaches; watersports; golf; tennis; and great shopping. The selection of dining venues is astounding, ranging from fast-food establishments to the most sophisticated restaurants offering haute cuisine in chic surroundings.

Nautical tourism is booming in Vallarta, especially at Marina Vallarta, a self-contained development north of Old Town featuring deluxe hotels, villas and condos, restaurants, boutiques, a championship golf course and, of course, full-service marina.

Bahia Banderas is an important whale habitat during the winter, when a number of local tour operators offer whale-watching boat excursions (information and bookings are available from any hotel in the area).

Another interesting boat ride is the voyage to the late film director John Huston's home in Las Caletas, a secluded cove only 45 minutes from town. Boats dock near the beach for a day of hiking and watersports, including lunch and a hammock siesta before returning to town.

Among the other fascinating experiences in Puerto Vallarta are a visit to Ague Azul, a nature preserve on a hill overlooking Vallarta; and the Terra Noble combination spa and learning center inside the preserve. Adobe buildings were created out of recycled materials and set on Vallarta's highest point overlooking the bay. Visitors will find an Aztec sauna and a number of spa treatments, as well as art workshops and other educational activities.

In an effort to attract more business travel to the region, Vallarta's Convention & Visitors Bureau is offering special support and facilities to groups and companies that come for retreats or meetings. Puerto Vallarta features a number of diverse meeting and event venues, capable of accommodating up to 1,200 people.
